Key Land Homes prides itself on its ability to adapt its designs to its clients’ needs, regardless of how those needs are communicated. “We’ve had people come to us with floor plans they’ve written on a napkin that we’ve been able to take and re-draw for them,” says Kevin Horkey, vice president of the Prior Lake, Minn.-based homebuilder.
The company offers roughly 30 different floor plans, but often makes changes to those plans with the help of an in-house designer trained in computer-aided design (CAD) technology. “Every single plan gets re-drawn,” Horkey adds. “That’s not really a problem for us, since our designer can take the base floor plan and make changes to it. Some of these changes are easy, while others can take more time and require moving the entire house around.”
Key Land Homes’ ability to be a semi-custom tract builder distinguishes it from many of its larger peers in the industry that focus more on mass production. “People have come to Key Land for the past 30 years because we can adapt to many products and turn homes around quickly,” Horkey says. “Our ability to customize for the client allows us to capture a market that a lot of our competition can’t.”
Established in 1983 by Kevin Horkey’s father, Gary Horkey, Key Land Homes is a family owned and operated homebuilder that operates in a variety of markets in the Minneapolis region. The company’s homes vary in size from 1,500 to 4,500 square feet and in price from $250,000 to more than $700,000.
Key Land Homes builds homes on finished lots in existing neighborhoods as well as in new developments that it builds either alone or in conjunction with its partnered builders. “We catch first-time buyers as well as second-time homeowners and larger move-outs,” he adds. “Being versatile, we can capture the whole market.” Recent projects include the Markley Lake subdivision in Prior Lake, which Key Land and two other builders are finishing up. The development has approximately 60 homes. The company also has completed homes in subdivisions including the Embry Place, Quarry Ponds and Quarry Ridge subdivisions in Apple Valley, Minn; and the Nickel Creek development in Chaska, Minn.
In addition to new homes, Key Land Homes is also experienced in townhome and condo remodeling and commercial build outs such as salons and offices. All of the subcontractors the company works with are also equally talented in commercial and residential work.
Key Land Homes works in conjunction with Prior Lake-based realty company Home Key Realty to market its homes. Home Key conducts regular walkthroughs with customers during construction and also is very knowledgeable in the products and floor plans that Key Land provides.
“They work one-on-one with customers and keep them involved in the process from the beginning,” Horkey says. “They know our product and do an unbelievable job working with our customers.”
Key Land Homes’ designers and staff also make themselves available to clients from selecting all the products to the entire warranty process. The company’s high level of customer service has earned them an “A-plus” rating from the Better Business Bureau for more than 30 years, he adds.
Many of Key Land Homes customers request high-end amenities including granite and quartz countertops, tile and stainless steel appliances. Other popular features in the company’s homes include free-standing bathtubs, kitchen backsplashes and wood cabinets. Many of these features are on display in the company’s model homes and design selection center.
“I’m proud of the style and look of our houses,” Horkey says. “Our model homes are beautiful and really set us apart from a lot of other builders. People walk into our model homes and can really picture themselves living in them.”
