Gensun’s products help clients move into ‘the outdoor room.’

Decorating the inside of the house has always been an area of focus for homeowners, but more have recently started looking at how they can enhance their outdoor spaces. “People want to live more outdoors,” Jan Trinkley says.
Trinkley is president at Gensun, which has made the outdoors its specialty. Based in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., the company manufactures outdoor furniture and kitchens with designs ranging from traditional to modern.
Gensun started operations in 2001, when a husband-and-wife team began making cast aluminum furniture. “That is still our forte today,” Trinkley says, adding that the company expanded over the years into fire pits and outdoor kitchens.
Today, Gensun manufactures its own products. The company, he notes, is one of the leading producers of cast aluminum in its industry.
“Aluminum is the best material that you can use outdoors,” Trinkley declares. “[It] will withstand the elements and will hold up for a long time, [including to] the sun, the rain, the snow, the heat and the cold.”
Gensun’s clients include independent specialty retailers across the United States, Canada and Australia. In addition, “We’re just expanding into the Middle East with a distributor at this time,” he adds.
Being the Best
Trinkley joined Gensun in 2004 after working for another outdoor furniture company for eight years. “Before that, I was in outdoor lawn and garden equipment for many years,” he says.
Ever since starting in outdoor products after he graduated from college, “That’s where I’ve stayed,” he says. “That’s what I’ve been good at and I enjoy it a lot.”
He credits Gensun’s success to its focus on client service. “We work closely with our customers, whether they are retailers, designers [or] builders, in the residential or the hospitality markets,” Trinkley says. “[We] work extremely hard to make sure the customer is happy.”
The company also ensures it delivers a quality product every time. “We buy the best materials, we put in the best work and we control it from beginning to end,” he says.
Leaps and Bounds
Now is a great time to be in the outdoor furniture business, Trinkley says. “The outdoor room is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds,” he states.
USA Today recently reported that “more people are looking to expand and decorate their outdoor rooms than ever before,” Trinkley continues. “It’s been one of the top rooms in the last three to five years that people have been decorating.
“People can work outdoors easier than they have before, using smart phones, iPads and laptops,” he says. “If we have to work there is no better place than a beautiful outdoor room.”
Gensun offers many furniture and kitchen designs and over 1,000 fabrics in many colors and patterns. “The opportunities for a beautiful, outdoor product are really good today.”
Gensun plans to give end users more opportunities by growing its lines. “We’re coming out with a lot of new products that we’ll introduce at industry shows,” Trinkley says, adding that it is critical for the company to introduce new products annually.
“Furniture is a fashion industry, whether it be indoor or outdoor,” he says. Each year, the company makes sure to introduce new seating and table collections, as well as new fabrics.
He predicts continued growth for Gensun, thanks to its service, quality and prompt shipping. “Those are our core philosophies of business, and we will continue to [abide by them],” Trinkley says.
